An entirely original score to a dystopian horror that never was.
I came across the Brooklyn based soundsmith via his regular 30 second Instagram posts, exploring a world of loops, synthesis and avant-garde symphonies. This EP has taken me to the very limits of what I would previously have considered to be music.
After a few listens, I’m genuinely amazed at how this EP came to be. At two years in the making, the patience and effort that has gone into this work are clear – the tracks seem to have required a director as much as a composer or producer. BlankFor.ms eschews all commonly held notions of time, rhythm and melody in order to weave an evolving story that is at times utterly terrifying.
It’s as close to a horror as I think you could find in a record; the pauses and silence doing as much to build tension as the eerily sampled drone and voice soundbites. There are moments when you’re teased with a glimpse of a tune – the hint of a familiar hip-hop beat – only to have it snatched away from you in an instant.
Each track – or should I say part, as the EP really does deserve to tell the story in its entirety – contains distinct quirks which mark gradual changes in feelings, often build around additional samples and momentary grooves. Whilst BlankFor.ms seems to have a taste for 20th century recording techniques and literature*, Its Torso Smears Right As ▙ ▚ ▛ ▜ ▟ could easily feel at home in the most modern of art galleries.
This doesn’t make for casual listening, it demands attention and an open mind, but if you’re as intrigued by the EP as I am then perhaps you’ll also enjoy Dark Secret World by Lutto Lento.
